BJP under the leadership of Narendra Modi has made striking entry in the politics of north east. BJP has able to grab a thumping majority in Assam election 2016. 6Sarbananda Sonowal
A current central cabinet minister holding sports portfolio belongs to Assam student politics whom BJP has projected as a Chief ministerial candidate from Assam. Has played a crucial role in this victory.
Sonowal was president of the powerful students body, All Assam Students Union, from 1992 to 1999. But, his career reached new heights in 2005 when, acting on his petition, the SC scrapped Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act, 1983 (IMDT). This earned him the title “Jati Nayak’. A trump card for BJP in this Assam election, Hemanta Biswa Sarma a former congress heavyweight, Whom Rahul Gandhi mis handled so much that out of frustration he join BJP and done the wonders for the party.
